The Beaty Endowment Challenge Match

John Terry Beaty
Former Community Foundation Trustee and Chair of the Finance and Investment Committee

Former Community Foundation Trustee John Terry Beaty and his wife Anne Mehringer have issued an endowment challenge match to encourage donors who share their vision to support and strengthen the community we call home.

They will make a $20,000 gift to the Endowment for The Community Foundation each time an existing fundholder:

  • Converts their fund to an endowment now

  • Names an endowment as its final purpose

  • Establishes a future endowment through a documented bequest intention.

How The Beaty Challenge Match Impacts Greater Washington

This match will last for the first 50 new endowment commitments – strengthening our communities and the nonprofits serving them for generations. As the region’s most prominent local funder, The Community Foundation has invested $1.7 billion since 1973 to build racially equitable, just, and thriving communities. The Greater Washington region heavily relies on the leadership and grantmaking support that The Community Foundation uniquely provides. Building long-term charitable resources is crucial. Unlike other major urban centers, large, private charitable foundations do not call the Greater Washington region home– making The Community Foundation especially important as a funder and catalyst for our region. Endowed funds guarantee that the needs of nonprofits in our community and beyond will continue to be met.

I believe that the measure of our lives is how we impacted others.
— John Terry Beaty

By endowing your fund, now or in the future, you preserve support for the nonprofits most important to you. Each year, a percentage of your fund’s balance will be distributed for the charitable purposes you name. Your fund will be invested with the goal of preserving the value of your initial gift over time. Your endowed fund will keep on giving for generations to come! Through The Beaty Endowment Match, we aim to increase the Endowment for The Community Foundation, allowing us to continue our work as a Grantmaker and community leader, as well as other endowments that provide long-term support to various charitable purposes—the result: A stronger, more vibrant Greater Washington region.

How The Beaty Challenge Match Works

  1. Ensure your fund will make a permanent difference for our community by doing one of the following:

    • Document an endowment as the final purpose of your fund to take effect after your lifetime. You can continue the fund’s current purpose, name a new one, or gift it to the Endowment for The Community Foundation.

    • Convert your fund now to an endowed fund.

  2. Complete the associated brief paperwork and boost your immediate impact by $20,000.

    • Terry and Anne will give $20,000 to the Endowment for The Community Foundation in your honor, bolstering our ability to serve the needs of the community and your philanthropic intent.

  3. The end of The Beaty Challenge.

  • The Beaty Challenge ends on March 31, 2026, when 50 new endowed legacies are documented or new endowments are established, whichever comes first.

Complete the associated brief paperwork and boost your immediate impact by $20,000.
